Work from home mom office

Background & Inspiration

I never thought it would be possible to be a stay-at-home mom and a work-from-home mom. I had my baby in January 2024 and returned to my full-time job the following June. As new parents, we were trying to figure out the best way to be there for our baby while managing our work schedules. Family members kept asking us if we were going to send my son to child care, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that it wasn’t the right move for us.

Both my husband and I have a work-from-home job. My husband’s job is focused on customer service, and his schedule is more rigid. I’m blessed to have a flexible work schedule and the ability to schedule important meetings around nap times.

Stay-at-home jobs and working from home have become a new normal for many of us, but when you add kids into the mix, it can feel like a whole new level of chaos. Finding a balance between work and childcare can be a daunting task. However, with the right setup, you can create a kid-friendly home office catering to productivity and play.

Designing a Functional & Safe Workspace

When designing a functional workspace that caters to both productivity and play, it’s important to consider the needs of both you and your children. Incorporating elements that appeal to young children will not only make the space more enjoyable for them but also encourage independent play while you work.

I baby-proofed my office, creating a dedicated space for me to work and for my baby to roam free. I keep my work area open so that he has as much room as possible to crawl around and do his daily activities (mostly chewing on anything he can find).

Baby proofing is an art! My desk has corners that aren’t sharp, but don’t feel good if you hit it hard (which is something my baby likes to do). This edging is so nice for protecting your baby while you’re working.

I’ll be honest. I didn’t take anyone seriously about covering your outlets because “Why would a baby even be interested in that?” Well, they are definitely interested in outlets. As soon as my baby took notice of our outlets, I bought this. All the open outlets in my office are covered so I don’t have to worry about my baby hurting himself!

I have cabinets on my desk with cords and file folders—not exactly baby-friendly materials. I used these drawer latches to keep him from pulling the drawer open to access the items. It keeps him safe from hitting his head on the drawer corners.

Incorporating Kid-Friendly Elements

Whether your office is your living room or kitchen table, it’s important to include elements that will make the space engaging and enjoyable for your children. This can be achieved by incorporating bright colors, fun artwork, and age-appropriate toys or activities. By creating an inviting and exciting space for kids, you can encourage them to play independently while you tackle your tasks.

This is one of my favorite toys! It’s great for tummy time and can still be used once the baby moves since the piano is portable. I have to say that I now know the lyrics to every song. You’ll understand when you hear about the purple monkey in the bubble gum tree!

My baby loved these rings right away. He has a new favorite ring every other day. He hasn’t figured out how to stack them yet, but he enjoys using them as teething toys! Unfortunately, our dog loves the rings too, so we’ve bought this a few times!

When we first bought this when my baby was 5 months old, he wasn’t very interested in it. Once he was 7 months old, it became a favorite! We have this connected to a pacifier clip and attach it to different areas for him to grab.

My brest friend is my best friend! Even if you’re not breastfeeding, this is the perfect cushion for your baby to sit on your lap. It adds space between the baby and the desk (keeping them away from your keyboard). It’s a great spot for them to fall asleep while you can still work around them!

Creating a Productive Environment

Incorporating elements that foster productivity is key to creating a harmonious and successful home office. Consider adding indoor plants, as studies have shown that plants can improve concentration and overall well-being. Natural light is also essential for creating a productive environment, so position your workspace near a window to maximize light exposure.

Minimizing clutter and distractions, such as electronic devices or noisy toys, can help you stay focused and on task. You can ensure that your home office is a place where both work and play can thrive. Your daily routine can easily be done in the right environment.

Adding Personal Touches

Adding personal touches to your kid-friendly home office can create a warm and inviting atmosphere that reflects your family’s personality and interests. Consider decorating with artwork created by your children, displaying family photos, or incorporating favorite colors and patterns. Personal items can also make the space feel more personal and comfortable.

By infusing your home office with elements that hold special meaning to you and your family, you can create a space that is not only functional but also emotionally uplifting. This personalized touch can help enhance the overall work and play experience for both you and your children.

Setting Boundaries for Work and Play

To maximize the efficiency and enjoyment of your kid-friendly home office, it’s essential to establish clear boundaries between work and play. Setting designated areas for work tasks and play activities can help maintain focus and productivity during work hours while allowing for relaxation and fun during breaks. Consider using visual cues such as separate storage bins or shelves for work and play supplies, or creating designated zones within the space for each purpose.

By clearly defining these boundaries, you can create a structured environment that promotes work-life balance and minimizes distractions. This balance is key to ensuring that both you and your children can make the most of your time in the home office, whether it be for completing tasks or unwinding together. By establishing and respecting these boundaries, you can create a harmonious environment where work and play seamlessly coexist, making your kid-friendly home office a truly versatile and productive space for the whole family.

Whether you have a full time or part-time job, it’s essential to design a space that balances work and play effectively. By incorporating functional elements, organizing for efficiency, and adding personal touches, you can create an inviting environment for both you and your children. Being a work-at-home mom isn’t impossible. As you implement these tips and ideas, keep in mind that a well-designed home office can enhance your work-life balance and overall productivity. So, go ahead and transform your space to create a workspace that meets the needs of your entire family.
